My father has always said that if you make something well, people will go out of their way to get it. I suspect many folks would do just that for Terri Horn’s Salty Oats cookies.
Terri Horn, the brilliant baker behind these cookies, grew up spending summers on Cape Cod. Originally from Washington DC, her dream was to ultimately set up her own baking business somewhere near the sea. Trained as a pastry chef, Terri developed the recipe for her signature cookies as a side project and it wasn’t until she was on a kayaking trip with friends in Maine that she finally made the decision to found her own business. Appropriately enough, she named her enterprise Kayak Cookies!
Since then, she has been making her original cookie – a kind of amped-up oatmeal raisin cookie sprinkled with salt. The oatmeal raisin cookie was subsequently joined by a chocolate cookie that contains, among other ingredients, coconut, oats and chocolate chunks. These two are the flagship flavors – bags are available in one flavor or the other or, for those who can’t choose between the two, there is the mixed bag. Also, at the Cambridge shop, we usually break open a bag and sell the cookies on an individual basis at the register – this has proved to be popular with folks who pop in to the shop to pick up lunch.
Terri makes every effort to source as many organic ingredients as possible – she uses organic oats, eggs, coconut, whole wheat flour and raisins to mention only a few. All of her cookies are handmade in Cape Cod in small batches. Attention to detail and commitment to quality shine through and one of her cookies, paired with a glass of cold milk or a cup of hot coffee, always goes down easily!
This past week, Terri just released her latest addition to the Salty Oats family – a cookie with chocolate chunks, a touch of coconut and pecans. As a baker myself, I immediately thought of Southern favorites – pecan pie and coconut cake!

Hi banba1 – Thanks for the shout out! I just checked out your blog and your write up on Salty Oats and the crostini made me chuckle… I can totally empathize with the quick disappearance of goodies (and cheese!) in the house!
Terri~
My husband and I live in Western NY about 60 miles south of Rochester. He lived in Falmouth, MA for 6 years and we return there every summer to vacation with our 3 boys. Our love for the area brings us anytime of the year, including February when drives along Racine Beach are especially beautiful. Last year, I brought my sister, her husband and their son as well as his friend to the Cape for the first time with us. They loved it! We were shopping in downtown Falmouth and came upon your cookies. I bought one bag as they looked charming and I adored the name. Not being a big sweets eater, I was not expecting much. I have been disappointed before in fancy cookies that look wonderful, but taste like sawdust. My first bite into one of your cookies quickly raised all expectations! They were amazing! Needless to say… I inhaled the entire bag before we got to Albany! I got home and immediatley started looking for the receipe online, but could find nothing close. Expecting our fourth child in June, I have been CRAVING those cookies and would love to know how I can get some delieved to me all the way here in Western NY! I just found your blog this morning and was so excited. Also, I would like to thank you for the BEST COOKIE EXPERIENCE EVER!
Sincerley,
Meghan
Meghan, thank you for your comment. We will forward your kind words on to Terri. I (Tim) had much the same experience while I was living in DC where Terri first started making her cookies. As you rightly say “best cookie experience ever!” We have been happily selling her cookies since shortly after she relocated to MA. We hope to have her in for a sampling some time so she can meet some of her fans. We’ll keep you posted.
OMG! I just experienced the chocolate-coconut-pecan version after espying it in your Huron Ave. shop. This immediately sparked an obsession with them. I can see that I need to make another trip into Cambridge after the weekend. I am only waiting because tomorrow is Easter, and I expect your shop will be packed!
Jean – Thanks so much for reading and for visiting the shop! We’re glad you had a chance to try Terri’s cookies! Aren’t they fantastic?! Hope to see you again soon!
